I just got my hands on one of the new EVS TAKT 981 helmets. EVS had been around for quite some time offering up some very innovative safety products. Their entry into the highly competitive helmet market is not a cookie cutter helmet with some EVS stickers on it. They did their homework on this one.
Right out of the box this lid is impressive. First thing that you notice is that it is not round. They went with a “squared” off shape in the back to make it look unique. It is constructed of an Aramid-Kevlar-Carbon-fiberglass composite which keeps it pretty light weighing in at 1450 grams. Of course, it is Snell and DOT approved and comes in several different color configurations to match any motocrosser’s stylish wardrobe. The helmet also comes with a handy helmet bag.
The helmet is well ventilated and comes with a feature that I have never seen incorporated into a helmet before. EVS has built in two channels into the bottom of the helmet. One on each side, filled with foam rubber to absorb impact with the collarbone in the event of a crash. Helmets are also available with an optional “shorty” visor for riders that like that style. Speaking of the visor, I noticed another really cool feature that EVS has incorporated into the 981. On each corner of the visor is another foam insert. These inserts keep the visor from getting all banged up during transport and even in a crash.
I tried my size XL helmet out at NEMX in Ohio at one of their indoor races. The helmet fit me well and had plenty of room in the face opening to fit my goggles on comfortably. The liner was very soft and comfortable. One thing that I liked was a snap on the end of the helmet strap. I could fasten the excess strap back up to the “D” ring area of the helmet to keep it from flopping around. I got my helmet with a matte finish and that really help to keep my goggle strap in place while riding.
All in all, I was very impressed with the EVS TAKT 981 helmet. Luckily, I didn’t get to crash test it, but I am confident in the helmet to do its job with shining colors when called into duty. The EVS TAKT line of helmets retails for $329. While that is not cheap, neither is the quality and innovation found in this helmet. This is a top of the line helmet any way that you look at it. Like they say, “if you have a $5 head, buy a $5 helmet”. For more information on the EVS TAKT 981 helmet, check them out on the web at www.evs-sports.com
